In 1876, Nicolaus Otto built the first four-stroke piston cycle internal combustion engine that was fueled by gasoline. There were many other inventors that made internal combustion engines; but none were as efficient as Otto’s four-stroke engine. This engine is commonly known as a “piston” or reciprocating internal combustion engine; in short, the Otto Cycle engine, and the Otto cycle concept is still used to this day. These engines are now equipped with high tech equipment, but the basic idea of the engine has not changed. ... The other type of internal combustion engine available is called a Wankel engine. The Wankel engine is named after its inventor Dr. ... The Wankel engine is more commonly known as a rotary engine. A rotary engine differs from the Otto cycle engine. There are fewer moving parts in the rotary engine; also the rotary engine runs much smoother than the Otto cycle engine.

     There are fewer moving parts in a rotary engine. The reciprocating Otto cycle engine takes four strokes to complete a power cycle, two strokes toward the head of the cylinder (up), and two away from the head (down).
