Act 4
Scene 2
The extract begins near the beginning of Act 4 Scene 2. The scene starts in the middle of a conversation between Othello and Emilia. ... In Act one Scene three he says: ‘Vouch with me, heaven’. ... Iago also uses diabolical imagery; in Act two Scene one he says, ‘Must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light. ...
This is concurrently, another powerful and painful scene of misunderstandings. Emilia’s remarks about trust in lines 12-19 do not touch Othello because h now misconstrues everything he hears and misreads what he sees; just like in the previous scene. ... His repetition of the words ‘whore’ and ‘strumpet’ throughout the scene indicates how far he is removed from the noble general of the first two acts, even if he still speaks poetically and with his customary measured tone at times. ... We will see this tendency to do this again later in Act five.
