Public education in America today is not as good as it could be. There are many examples of that opinion in Joan Beck’s article and in the “Doonesbury” cartoon. In my opinion there are many important impacts from family, government, cultural values, peer pressure, student and teacher attitudes. In Joan Beck’s article entitled: The Success of Children of Asian boat People in America Schools Raises Hard Questions”, it talks about how parents and families need to be there for their kids education. It goes on to show that parents have to make it possible for their kids to be able to do their school work at home. The article explains that without the parent’s help then the kid’s won’t be comfortable or prepared too study and learn. Most American families don’t help their brother and sisters’ with school work, but in other countries such as Asia the family would get together and work with each other until they understood their school work. In the “Doonesbury” cartoon, by G.B. Trudeau, it shows that teachers don’t care about the grade they give the student until the student’s parent make something about it. In the cartoon the teacher gives the student a A for his paper even thou the student clearly copied the encyclopedia Britannica. The teacher reason for giving the student a grade like that was so the student’s parent would not start an argument with him and just wanted the kid to slid through the class.
