Alan B. Shepard, JR. Alan B. Shepard, JR, with the help of NASA, took part in one our country’s greatest achievements. He piloted America's first manned space mission, on May 5, 1961. Not only that, but he was also one of only twelve astronauts to date to have walked on the moon. Alan was born on November 8, 1923. He grew up in East Derry, New Hampshire. As a child, his favorite subjects in school were math and science. He was always fascinated with planes. Throughout his high school years, he worked at a nearby airport. Alan’s interest in planes soon earned him his aviation wings. In 1944 He graduated from the US Naval Academy with his Bachelor of science, and fought in WWII aboard the destroyer Cogswell. He eventually began his studies with NASA and earned a seat aboard the Mercury 7. However, things were not perfect for him in the beginning. From 1964-1970, he was grounded by NASA because of inner ear complications. Despite the incident, he eventually got passed it and went into space. Alan become the first American to fly in space. He made a 15-minute suborbital flight aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft. After President Kennedy made a goal of landing a man on the moon, Shepard became head of NASA’s astronaut office.
