The Sacraments of Initiation Comparison of Rituals and Meaning The Ritual of Confirmation: Symbol Actions and Words… • The Laying on of Hands: Rituals- The Laying on of Hands (A Powerful Connecter): Hands are a symbol of power. This is an ancient practice of conferring power onto a person by placing both hands on the persons head. In the past, Kings and Knights traditionally received their official power through the laying on of hands. o Blessing, Creating, Comforting, and Supporting: Hands are an apt symbol for the Holy Spirit. We use our hands to greet, pat each other on the back, and in physical cases, they can be used for fighting. o Spirit Touching: In confirmation, the bishop initially “lays hands on” all the candidates together by extending hands over the whole group. After the bishop is ready to anoint with Chrism (the special consecrated oil used in Baptism), he places his hand on each person’s head, and marks a sign of the cross on his or her forehead; this is symbolically the place of wisdom. • Anointing with Chrism: Rituals- Anointing with Chrism (A Commissioning to Service): These actions, the renunciation of sin and the profession of faith, are the same promises made at baptism and so are a renewal of them. They remind the candidates and the whole community of essential connections between baptized and being confirmed. o The anointing at confirmation is an act of consecrating the person, to share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the church. In the Roman Catholic Church, the bishop usually does the anointing, as well as the laying on of hands to link the person symbolically to the universal church.
