A lonely wayward turtle crawls slowly across a hot burning country road in the middle of a summer day, his journey is long and slow. Cars come. A lady comes quickly but sees him from a distance, she swerves hard barely staying on the road but passes him. Next thought a light truck though comes with a wild driver. He sees the turtle and aims to hit him off the road. He comes fast and his aim is only a little off. He hits the turtle’s shell from the corner sending him flipping towards the end of the road. The bruised turtle though flips itself over with some effort, shakes itself off, and continues his arduous journey with a strong persistence. Before this passage we have only been just introduced to the harsh Kansas farm life during the Great Depression. The narrator is someone from an outside view focused on the journey of the turtle.
