Several “classic” psychology studies would be ethically questionable by today’s standards. Stanley Milgram’s studies of obedience and Philip Zimbardo’s prison simulation. How do these studies fit into the early approaches of modern psychology? Were these studies ethical? Would these studies be conducted today? The Milgram and Zimbardo studies or experiments focus on human behavior and tie back to the early approaches of modern psychology, specifically, the behavioral perspective. These studies were more behavioral focused because they centered on measurable physical responses to environmental stimuli and motivation – to observable behavior. Obedience is a deeply ingrained behavioral predisposition, but everyone one, at one time or another, has overlooked personal feelings in order to conform.
