behind a shield of lies

Behind a Shield of Lies “To protect and to serve.” is the motto of the US police force. That’s not the case for 32 year old Abner Louima who was taken in to the 70th Precinct by officer Volpe who mistakenly thought Abner punched him in a disturbance outside a Brooklyn nightclub on Aug 9, 1997. Louima was forced into the cop car where he was beaten by 2 Officers, Schwarz and Bruder. Volpe was charged with ramming a broken broomstick into Louima’s rectum and face. Officer Wernick testified that Volpe “took a stick and put it five or six inches up Louima’s rectum, took it out and put it up to his mouth and teeth area, kind of showing it to him.” Officer Schoer was tormented by Volpe with the end of an excrement-soiled stick in his face. When Schoer asked what was on the end of the stick, Volpe replied “Human sh--”. People naturally need to feel security in their life. It’s a necessity, and the people who are there to carry out that job are setting wrong examples and over abusing their powers. Sure the police are out there protecting us from the “bad guys”, but who’s protecting us from them? Sure there’s the court system and all that legal crap. But when it comes down to it it’s your word against the state, represented by the officer sworn in to uphold the law and the truth. Is society to say that Police are infallible? How can that be, they are human just like the criminals and murderers? Police brutality happens all the time, and its happening more frequently then ever. April 5, 2000, Sgt. William Paranto was suspended for 180 days after 6 people accused him of brutality against drug suspect Pernell Brooks. Two people said that Paranto kicked Brooks until he lapsed into a coma.
