A recent problem for the government has been the provision of school sport, in the way that not enough PE lessons are being provided, and schools do not have the money or equipment to provide safe and good quality PE lessons. This is why Specialist Sports Colleges (SSC) and School Sports Co-ordinator officers (SSCO) have been introduced along, with a large number of grants and programmes in order to improve PE in schools. ... The aim of the Active Schools programme was to ‘provide every young person at school in England with high quality, sustainable opportunities to learn foundation skills and participate in the sport or physical activity of their choice’. The content of the programme was a series of initiatives, many of which already featured in the National Junior Sport Programme, and included well established schemes such as Sportsmark, TOP Play and TOP Sport as well as new schemes such as the creation of School Sport Co-ordinators.
The school sports co-ordinator programme looks to help schools when delivering PE lessons, by sending a sports officer to the school who can help and assist in delivering safe and effective lessons, making sure that the pupils are getting what they need and deserve, which according to the DCMS is two hours of PE a week. ...

The key principles of the programme are to integrate sports development and partnership, offer support for physical education lessons and to focus on disadvantage and inclusion. They aim to reach these principles through strategic planning to enhance PE, also through building links with the school and sports clubs that run in the area, by offering out of school ‘extra-curricular’ activities, and through coaching and leadership in order to help raise the standards of PE lessons.
The Youth Sport Trust state that ‘School sport co-ordinator partnerships are families of schools that come together to enhance sports opportunities for all. ... This helps to pay for a full time partnership development manager, the release of one teacher from each secondary school two days a week to allow them to take on the role of school sports co-ordinator officer’.
The outcomes of the partnerships have shown an increase in participation among school age children, an increase in participation amongst girls, black and ethnic minorities, and disabled people, also an improvement in the standard of performance, motivation and attitudes, and finally an increase in the number of qualified and active coaches.
