Equal Rights? The various documents in Kathryn Kish Sklar’s book convey people’s different opinions in both the antislavery movement split over women’s rights and then the women’s rights issue split over the issue of race. These two episodes raised issues of prejudice not only against African Americans but women as well. Although there is one minor difference in the two episodes, they are, for the most part, similar in their nature. The two episodes are similar because the women’s rights movements and the antislavery movement go hand in hand in both splits. For example, women’s rights rose inside the antislavery issue, creating a new question of whether or not women have full rights to membership in the American Anti-Slavery Society. Further, the issue of race rose inside the purely women’s rights movement, raising the question of whether or not women’s rights means all women or just the white public. This shows how the two episodes are similar and that the antislavery movement is liked to the women’s rights movement and the issue of race as well.
