criticism surrounding the film’s violent aesthetic, the director and his message and the
distribution of the film through independent companies. ...

featured in this film. ...
Battle Royale created controversy even before it was released in Japanese cinemas.
There was already concern about a rise in juvenile violence which many believed
would be further influenced by ‘Battle Royale’. ... ‘Battle Royale’ was labelled
crude and tasteless with a Democratic Party member calling for a ban the film feeling
Battle Royale would "incite crime" and "destroy order".
The Japanese government was so concerned about ‘Battle Royale’ that the education

minister Nobutaka Machimura asked cinemas not to screen the film and asked on
distributors and producers to look again at films that might be a bad influence on
children and to show more self restraint. ...
All this commotion over ‘Battle Royale only strengthened its appeal to the youth of
