On June 26 the ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled two to one that the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance was unconstitutional. ... Obviously many though the ruling made the entire Pledge unconstitutional, but the Court merely ruled against the incursion of “Under God” into the Pledge. ... “Under God” came with the infamous act of Congress on 1954. ... The alteration of the pledge conveyed to America that to be a patriotic American, one must also be religious. ... Some courts have ruled that the reference to God in the pledge is merely “ceremonial deism” - the practice of government co-opting generic religious language for ceremonial purposes.
