Unconventional politics are a type of politics that goes outside of the normative system and engages in protest and mass mobilization (Rimmerman, 2001, p. ... The 1960’s Civil Rights movement is a prime example of this type of politics and is exemplified clearly in John Lewis’ book Walking with the Wind. African Americans came into America with no rights and no means of entering the political system through conventional methods until pushed to unconventional politics. ... They understood that when one wants to participate in government but is prevented, the doorway to insider politics is through the use of unconventional action.
Unconventional politics are a necessary strategy for political and social change in America when a particular group wants to be involved in the political system but cannot due to some form of obstacle. ... With no voice to speak from, these obstacles left no choice other than unconventional action to enter into the world of insider politics.
The American political system both promotes, and then discourages the African Americans use of unconventional action as a way of politics by not taking a stand in favor of the equality between two skin colors. ... With the nation leaving no fair conventional means of entering into that political spectrum, a rally around unconventional politics would take place for that change.
