... The novel Jesse by Gary Soto tells the story of a young man and his brother who are living the lives of farm laborers while fantasizing about a greater life. The novel takes its readers through only a small segment of Jesse’s life; from the time he moves out of his mother and stepfather’s house to shortly after his older brother Abel gets drafted by the Army into Vietnam. During this time Jesse shows great maturation, and learns many lessons on love, faith, and the harsh realities of life.
Jesse’s father died when Jesse and his brother were young, and the story starts out explaining his life at home with his mother and the man she re-married. ... While Jesse and his brother Abel love their mother very much, they have no respect for their stepfather. Jesse tries continually to have a civil relationship with the man, but falls under scrutiny each time he puts forth an effort.
One evening while Jesse is trying to sit and watch television his stepfather speaks out after noticing Jesse’s longer haircut, “You’re not going to be a happy—I mean, a hippie, are you?” Comments like these further Jesse’s motivation to move out and become independent, away from his poor home life. ... After dropping out of high school Jesse joins his brother in college aspiring to be an artist. Jesse admires his brother and the way he thinks. ... ”
Throughout the story Jesse’s brother is the most important person in his life, and he keeps Jesse’s spirit up. ... Jesse first sees what two people in love looks like when his brother is with his girlfriend.
