Reorientation Therapy

... A therapy has been used for this purpose in order to covert someone from homosexual to heterosexual. If effective, this therapy has the potential to make many people’s lives a lot easier but we do not know if it is effective or safe. In this essay I will be presenting information on both sides of the debate and siding with the view that reorientation therapy is unethical and should be discontinued. ... 272) This can be looked at both ways because people who disagree with orientation therapy feel that because a clear definition for sexual orientation is not available, the therapy should not be performed with out more knowledge of the issue. Throckmorton (1998) also makes a point that, banning people therapy to modify their sexual orientation would constitute as discrimination by the American Counseling Association.
Also in the article, the author gives some statistics on the effectiveness of the therapy. ... In another study, it shows the results of 882 people that took part in reorientation therapy. At the end of the therapy, only 13% of the 882 remained either exclusively or almost exclusively homosexual. Also in this report, Birk (1980) said that by using behavioral group counseling and individual counseling, “100% of exclusively gay men beginning therapy with the intent to change sexual arousal were able to attain a heterosexual adaptation. ... While stating all of these facts about the success of reorientation therapy, Throckmorton still says, “I do not know with certainty if I have ever been successful in ‘changing’ a person’s sexual orientation. ... 273) Just because the clients said that they were no longer homosexuals is not necessarily proving that the therapy works. ... This therapy has not been around long enough or studied thoroughly enough to know all of the outcomes.
