Draft: 2 Informal Essay Just recently, Alex upgraded his computer from a measly four year old Pentium II processor to a brand new Pentium IV. As part of his daily routine, he always sits at home in front of his computer for an X amount of hours typically downloading, listening to music, chatting, and playing games. This helps satisfy and improve his overall internet performance and usage. Alex has been eagerly awaiting for this day to come because prior to his upgrade, Alex’s old computer frequently experience technical difficulties such as crashing on a daily bases. He is constantly receiving the “Blue Screen of Death”. Alex assumes it was probably because his old computer was unable to keep up with the blazing internet speed. Unfortunately for Alex, even with his new system he continues to experience the same problem as before. Much to his surprise the “Blue Screen of Death” reappears on his new system within less than a week. Little does Alex realize, his computer is actually being hacked by one of his “friends.” Hackers are motivated by the belief that knowledge should be shared with other people who can benefit from it. To hackers, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Although it is not their identities they’re using, hackers believe that important resources such as programs, document files, and one’s identification can and should be utilized rather than wasted. Despite what the media says about hackers, not all hackers are bad. Hackers usually belong to a strong community which firmly believes in the sharing of information. This community consist of Hackers, Neo hackers, dark side hackers, crackers, script kiddies, lamers, phreakers, and “warez d00dz”. Hackers and Neo hackers are the most active among this community. A hacker is defined as one who is very familiar with the programming system and is willing to explore and stretch its limits, with creativity and imagination. According to Steven Levy, author of Hackers, Heroes of the Computer Revolution, hackers "are possessed not merely by curiosity, but by a positive lust to know”.
