Sense of Community A New Social Paradigm
... Amitai Etzioni in his book, “The New Golden Rule” gives some insight and solutions to reorganizing our social structure for the good of all. Etzioni offers us a new social paradigm. In todays society we are so overly concerned with individual rights that we have lost our sense of social responsibility. What was once known as moderation or common sense is now considered an archaic or otherwise outdated way of governing oneself. ... We have lost our sense of community. ... In the past, the social paradigm was extremely rigid and did not allow for much individual autonomy. In western culture, beginning in the 1960s, a movement to break out of the rigid social paradigms of the past began with a bang. ... Etzioni makes a good point when he states, “Movement from a high level of social restriction to a greater measure of choice, and hence enhancement fo individual liberties, at some point becomes eroneous for the actors involved and undermines the social order upon which liberties are ultimately base”. ... Still, the negative downside to this social upheaval needs to be addressed if we are truly going to be a uccessful society.
