The Vietnam war initially began with the countrys struggle for independence from the French, who refused to acknowledge Vietnams independence from the Japanese after World War Two. The French had occupied Vietnam from the 1880s until the end of World war Two, and the Vietnamese people desperately wanted their freedom, this provoked Ho Chi Min, a Vietnamese nationalist, to write several letters to the United States for aid in this struggle. ... The Soviet Union was a "World Power" at that time, so their assistance with the North Vietnamese further escalated the cold war tensions between the the Soviet Union and the United States After the Vietnamese alliance with the Soviet Union, the United States realized Ho Chi Min and his Vietminh were communist, and therefor a threat to the world.
