... From here came some of the most well-known artistic works of the 16th century, including those from a man born as Paolo Caliari, but more commonly known as Paolo Veronese.
Veronese was born the son of a sculptor in 1528 and was raised in a town in Northern Italy known as Verona. Despite his father’s desire to have his son follow in the same field of art Veronese discovered at a young age he fancied painting much more so than sculpting. He soon entered the studio of Antonio Badile, a respected Veronese painter, who influenced him with the Veronese style; this had a lasting impact in his art for the rest of his career, hence the reason for him being known as Paolo Veronese rather than the name given to him at birth. Verenonese’s moved to Venice in 1553 to better pursue his career in art, being there influenced by such artists as Titian and Tintoretto. ... In response Veronese defended his work with his now famous quote, “We painters take the same license poets and jesters take… I paint pictures as I see fit and as well as my talents permit.
