Rene J. LeGras Jr. T-TR 11am Reality Colloquium All God’s Children Are the artificial intelligences life? The influential philosopher, Baruch Spinoza, might answer a qualified yes. True, Spinoza had nary an inkling of the potentiality of an endeavor which would endow machines with a form of reason and birth the question, but the question has been broached and we need to build criteria to judge it. It is as yet, undetermined how consciousness and matter accomplish the synergy of life. It seems clear that organisms are constructed of both. Matter is one thing, while motivity is another. Motivity is what constitutes life, an animation with purpose. If one equates motivity with consciousness, one sees consciousness in the simplest of life forms ; one celled organisms appear to act with purpose, to multiply, feed, and survive. Spinozan theory is that the energy that fuels the body is one thing and the energy of the mind another.
