Li Yan
27 November 2003

Introduction
The purpose of this lab was to prepare an important substance, sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate, which has many uses both in chemistry lab and in everyday life. Sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate is prepared by dissolving powdered elemental sulfur in a solution of sodium sulfite; a small amount of detergent is also added to assist in dissolving. Standard solutions of thiosulfate can be used to titrate unknown samples containing iodine, but no titrations were done in this lab. ... There were a few substances that were hazardous: Sodium sulfite and sulfur are skin irritants, Iodine is toxic, an eye irritant and somewhat corrosive to skin, Hydrochloric acid is toxic, corrosive and will burn skin, and Silver nitrate will stain the skin but cause no harm.
