Through the course of history women have come a long way. For example, the suffrage movement when women fought hard to get the right to vote. During the 1960’s and 1970’s Women’s Liberation was occurring. Women sought after social equality. But one of the most significant accomplishments for women was in sports. One of the first major sports women wanted to play was baseball. Baseball has always been one of America’s favorite past time. In the past it was never the social norm for a woman to participate in the adored game of baseball. The assumption was always for women to take care of the home and be helpless, not get involved with anything that would get them dirty.
Most people only know of a womans baseball league being established during World War II, but actually women played baseball well before that. Starting in 1865, many women were allowed to actually go and watch men play baseball. Several baseball parks had a ladies day to bring in more fans, which equaled more money for the owners. In 1866, quite a few all girls’ colleges began baseball clubs. Such as, Vassar College was one of the first colleges to start baseball clubs.
