The Merchant of Venice In the play, The Merchant of Venice, William Shakespeare writes about the lives of real people living in the 1600’s. The story takes place in Venice and Belmont. Shakespeare portrays his characters as humans who have strengths as well as weaknesses. Each character has a personality of their own and is able to get the attention of their audience. Bassanio is who is a high spirited and impetuous young man, but as he matures he becomes more responsible and is a generous and loyal friend. Shakespeare portrays Bassanio as a high spirited young man who squanders his fortunes on luxuries and parties. Personal gratification is main concern in life and because of his arrogance about money, he keeps spending until there is none left.
