Yolanda Patterson ERP#1 Night Word Count# 1,191 I really enjoyed the book “Night”. I thought there was a lot of symbolism throughout the book. I also found that each and every chapter had a powerful meaning behind it. In chapter, one I learned how important religion was to young Eliezer. Despite the fact that his father thinks that he is too young to immerse himself in religious mysticism. I think this shows a lot about him. It shows that he is not only courageous but also strong enough to stand up on his own and go against his father’s wishes. At the beginning of the book, I had a lot of respect for him right off the back. I can relate a lot to Eliezer because I to had the same questions when I was growing up. Eliezer couldn’t understand why God was allowing so much death and destruction to take place around him. I asked myself the same thing why do God let people kill each other, why do we die, and why do diseases exist? I think that Eliezer questioning God actually strengthened his faith as to it did mine. In chapter, two I got my first glimpse of how human behavior changes when people are placed in extreme circumstances. After being confined in a small, cramped wagon with no food, water, or sanitation, the young people submit to their animal instincts and copulate without even considering the people around them. I think that if people aren’t respected as individuals within society and are instead treated as animals, as the Jews are, then they will begin to act as animals, without any regard whatsoever to the usual social conventions and responsibilities. In addition to that, I think that it’s the physical torture and extermination that the Nazis submitted the Jews to that has proven to be the most damaging to the Holocaust survivors.
