Jane views Rochester as a bold, dominating, critical and condescending, at times, to state a few of his bad qualities. ... An example of his mood swings when Jane and Adele were invited to tea with Mr. Rochester. ... Luckily, Jane tries to understand Mr. Rochester, rather than become upset with his agitated nature. ... When Jane was having tea with him for the first time he immediately insulted her musical and artist capabilities, saying they were either not good or not of her own creation. ... Yet, Rochester’s nature allows him to easily say this to Jane. Also, in chapter 14 when Rochester commands Jane to converse with him, she says she has nothing to say and therefore is not interested in doing so. Rochester interprets this as her being inexperienced and “dumb,” and says “I claim only such superiority as must result form twenty years’ difference in age and in century’s advance in experience. In the first few chapters of Rochester’s presence it appeared to me that he takes little interest in Adele, for when she tries to kiss him or show affection he takes it in without much mutual feeling. ... This also can be related back to the inner pain and resentment of childhood affection within Rochester, that makes him immune to such affection. Although this seems like an incredible fault of Rochester’s until it is revealed to the reader that Adele is not even truly his child, and that even with this knowledge he is still raising her and giving her a wonderful life. This instance reveals the great amount of goodness Rochester possesses and shows that he truly does have a heart and morals.
