Unification through sports was the first thing I thought after watching the movie, Remember the Titans. But it was deeper than that. This movie was about courage, over coming the odds, survival, determination, respect, unification and standing up for what you believe in no matter what the repercussion. Although the real life story of this movie took place in 1971, it proves that not much has changed. Whites still panic when African-Americans or another minority race group move into a neighborhood where their race dominates. As I have learned in minority group relations a lot of the prejudices and stereotypes we learn come from our parents. This was seen in the movie when the white players returned from football camp getting along and the parents were in awe believing that maybe their children were brainwashed or drugged. They couldn’t fathom this because this sort of behavior wasn’t the norm in their households or outside the homes. I really admired Coach Boone for his efforts in attacking prejudice head on, knowing the consequences he would face. Coach Boone never felt threatened by the fact that he was outnumbered.
