Good Man is Hard to Find

... ” Flannery O’Connor illustrates the theology of grace in her story A Good Man is Hard to Find. ... ” As she begins to interrogate him on his spirituality and advises prayer as a method for his salvation, she learns more and more about the Misfit and his past, and is able to classify him as “a good man”. The feeling of the conversation now shifts from the grandmother attempting to save her own life to a genuine interest in the man standing before her. ... When the Misfit says, “She would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life,” O’Connor is only proving the necessity of the grandmother’s revelation and identifying the contrast between the shallow exterior and the spiritual grace of her soul. Early in the story, the grandmother calls Red Sammy “a good man” because they agree on several issues. Later on, she also calls the Misfit “a good man” as she is able to look into his soul and catch a glimpse of salvation.
