A Comparison of Anti-Slavery Texts: Sab and The Autobiography of a Slave Slavery is defined as an “institution based on a relationship of dominance and submission, whereby one person owns another and can extract from that person labor or other services” (Columbia Encyclopedia). In other words, slavery deprives a human being from his or her own freedom for no logical reason. ... During the 1800’s, slavery was very common in the Caribbean. ... With these movements came two very important narratives for the cause: “Sab”, written by Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda and “Autobiography of a Slave”, written by Juan Francisco Manzano. These two texts describe the struggles that slaves have to deal with. ... The most important difference between these two texts is that “Sab” was written by an anti-slavery woman and “Autobiography of a slave” was written by a slave. Gomez de Avellaneda who herself felt the oppression of being a women, compared it to that of being a slave through the main character of her text, Sab a mulatto slave. ... The slave can at least change masters, can even hope to buy his freedom …” (Gomez de Avellaneda 144). ... On the other hand, Manzano’s text is an autobiography. It tells about Manzano’s own experiences as a slave. In other words, it is a slave writing about his own life, which in a way is a kind of rebellion since slaves weren’t allowed to learn how to read and write. ... Manzano’s text isn’t as well elaborated as Gomez de Avellaneda’s since she was an aristocrat and Manzano a slave. ... Through his text, Manzano transmit his sufferings and emotions, people can get touched and it helped understand the atrocities of slavery. Sab, the main character and slave in the novel “Sab” is a calm character. ... Sab grew up with her and never suffered any mistreatments by his master, Don Carlos. The only and greatest suffering Sab had to deal being in love of with a forbidden woman to his race. ... Overwhelmed by the love of her future husband, Enrique, she never realized that she had true love by her side, Sab. Sab knew the truth about Enrique’s intentions. ... To avoid Carlota’s suffering, Sab gave up his winning lottery ticket making believe everyone that Carlota was the true winner and now she had enough wealth for Enrique to marry her.
