Purpose: The density of water was determined in this laboratory activity in order to illustrate accuracy and precision in measurements. Another outcome of this lab was an increased familiarization with different types of glassware. The contents of this laboratory activity also provided a practical application the use of significant figures. Another objective of this activity was to practice the calculation and interpretation of percent error. Procedure: The density of water was measured using three different types of glassware: a 50 mL beaker, a 25 mL graduated cylinder and a 25 mL burette. With the use of a balance, the mass was measured to a 0.01 g precision with each volume of water. Using this data, the density was calculated for each measurement for each type of glassware.
