In 1984 Oceania was a manipulative society. The party controlled all the thoughts of the members and influenced their every belief. George Orwell displays the events through his detailed imagery and the pictures he creates reveal his tone throughout the novel. The main characters in this book go through many events where the scene plays an important role in the meaning and tone of the occurrence. The setting in which Winston is introduced to the vacant room above Mr. Charringtons antique shop as well as when he is exposed to the openness and calmness of the fields where Winston and Julia first make love is filled with an in depth description. Orwell’s use of imagery is a key element in revealing his tone.
