The history of race relations was a major issue in the United States. African Americans were represented as a lower class society. Everyone in their surrounding would make them feel as if they were low lives. Because of their skin color, the way people acted towards them was completely inappropriate. In the novel, Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison, the situation of race is explained. Toni Morrison used several characters to create a better understanding. One of the characters is Cholly Breedlove. Toni Morrison makes the reader see how Cholly has been hurt. He undergoes a disturbing experience with racism during his sexual exploration. During his early years, he has been physically and mentally abused by white men. Cholly is first presented as a drunk and lazy father and husband. He and his wife constantly fight with one another. In the first scene he is knocked unconscious by his wife, while unconscious, his son wishes death upon him due to hatred.
