Should parents be able to choose which school a student can attend? Should they be able to choose to go to a different public school? ... The debate over whether or not the United States government should grant tuition vouchers to the parents of children to spend at any school they choose, public or private, has gone on for many years. It is a very popular topic among parents in low-income urban areas and includes many powerful arguments on both sides of the issue. Voucher programs offer students attending both public and private schools tuition vouchers. These vouchers are government grants of funds that can be used by families to allow their children to attend schools other than those that they have been assigned by their local school board. State governments would redeem the vouchers presented by schools by paying the specific amounts for each student enrolled. This amount could possibly be the equivalent of the average student’s educational coat in that state.
With proponents criticizing the appalling education offered in public schools and the opponents fearing the drain of the best and brightest from the public schools, there is little agreement between the two parties on the issue.
