Now and Then

As a freshman I never thought I would be content with not winning the title or not having the fame of a state champion. As a senior I can see the change. I can see who I have become. I know I would not be the "me" I am today without the impact I received from my volleyball experiences, friends, and team. The memories will always be with me and will always have an impact on how I live my life. Through the past four year I have gained so much. The difference of who I was freshman year and who I am now as a senior is astounding. Freshman year I tried out for the volleyball team, nobody really knew each other and every freshman stood wide-eyed as the seniors and other upper class-men bumped, set, and spiked. I became one of the twelve or so “individuals” on the team. This lesson was taught to me through two upper class-men: number five, setter, senior, Jessica Sanchez; and defensive specialist, senior, Crystal Sawyer. I don’t know their average assists per game, number of digs, or any other statistical information, but I do know the things that they taught through their actions and their words. I hoped that someday I could become like them. Jessica was the starting setter; she was the player that I wanted to become. She called and executed plays. I believed she was the best one on the team; she always hustled and never quit. I remember going to the banquet at the end of the season and Jessica didn’t receive any reward for her what I believed well-deserved efforts- that is when I first learned the true position of the setter and what it means to be “part” of the team. She, as the setter, set up the hitters for their “glory hits” and kills.
