When writing any piece of literature where emotions and feelings are a central theme to the story, the author must take in to account that emotion of any type can be quite difficult to effectively express. Words written on a paper are not an efficient means with which to fully convey the intensity and passion that is human emotion. While a reader may understand that a character is, say, angry he or she won’t, and can’t, fully take into account the intense, violent livid emotion said character is experiencing. The short story “The Storm” displays exceptionally shrewd use of scenery to better communicate emotion to the reader. The stormy weather, which is a major aspect of the plot, and the emotional state of the characters are directly in sync with one another. The stormy weather is brilliantly paralleled with the characters actions and feelings by author Kate Chopin.
