Nathaniel Hawthorne was a romantic writer who looked at the dark side of human nature. ...
Hawthorne felt guilty for the actions of his Puritan ancestors. Hawthornes grandfather, John Hathorne, was one of the most unsympathetic judges in the Salem witch trials and was responsible for the death of many innocent people during the late 1600s. Because of the actions of his grandfather, Nathaniel changed the spelling of his last name. Hawthorne viewed the Puritan society as being judgmental and discriminating against others. In many of his writings, it seems Hawthorne tried to show the Puritans as a less forgiving and uncaring group of people; one who has lack of sympathy for fellow human beings.
