Passage I, page 29-30 I selected this as my first passage on how the Party used psychological manipulation to achieve the “perfect” government. The passage describes Winston’s wake up to a shrill whistle, followed by the “Physical Jerks” to wake him up. The telescreen played a large part in the eradication of privacy in one’s own household. The Party bombards the population with objects and ideas designed to psychologically manipulate citizens with its corrupt theories, thereby eradicating the capability for dangerous, independent thought. Orwell uses diction, imagery, and specific detail to portray Winston’s disgruntled approach to being rudely awakened by a shrill whistle and the yapping voice on the nearby telescreen.
