Hoop Dreams Assignment In the documentary Hoop Dreams, the filmmaker made several points related to class and education. A first point they made referring to class was that people in lower classes are more likely to get involved with teenage pregnancy. This point was displayed in one scene where William had a new addition to his family at age sixteen: a daughter. This scene is a way to shock the audience. At the beginning of the clip, the narrator states that there is a new addition to William’s family. The viewer would naturally expect it to be a sister, brother or cousin, but soon realizes it is in fact, his own daughter. This creates an effective surprise, since the fact that William even had a girlfriend is unknown to the viewer. When William talks about the fact that he is a father at sixteen, he’s completely nonchalant, and unaware of how much responsibility parenting a child can be. He’s absorbed with how adorable the baby is more than anything else. When asked how this happened, he carelessly states that is was an accident, as if it were no big deal. In a low class, this issue is usually addressed the way William addresses it. However, William sticks by his girlfriend throughout the film, while many people in his class and situation would leave her.
