Despair Of The Mind Depression is a disease that restricts individuality and freedom. It takes over every aspect of an individuals everyday life. The ambition to do things is no longer there, and there are no social interactions. People who suffer from depression close themselves from society, such as Bartleby in Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby the Scrivener.” Herman Melville uses images of confinement and limited speech vocabulary, portrayed by Bartleby to symbolize isolation. Bartleby isolated himself from society verbally. His surroundings such as his workplace, the office, became a symbol of isolation and due to his depressed state of mind, ended up not only mentally but also physically confined in prison that resulted in a symbolic state of isolation. Isolation is the symbolism that Bartleby’s life started out with in the workplace and isolation is what eventually ends his life. The first symbol that began Bartleby’s isolation was his lack of communication, towards his co-workers and society.
