In the short story, "On the Sidewalk Bleeding," by Evan Hunter, the main character, Andy, discovers the down sides of being part of a gang. Andy is a member of The Royals gang who gets beaten up by members of The Guardians gang and is left for dead in an alley. Andy goes through several changes in his feelings towards being a part of a gang. He also struggles with thoughts about his choice of a lifestyle that eventually leads him to death. His jacket, embroidered with "The Royals" on the back, proves to be a main factor in Andy's eventual downfall. However, throughout the story, Andy learns many lessons in life that would have been good to know had he lived. Right at the beginning of the story, Andy is dying and all he is thinking about is how much of a good fight he's had and how bad he is beaten. At this point in time, he doesn't know he is dying.
