Miles Dewey Davis was born on May 26, 1926 in Alton, Illinois. The birth of Davis should mark the birth of many new and innovative types of Jazz music that he created in his lifetime. There are few musicians that can be credited with being the driving force in more than one style of music, Davis is one of them. 1948 is when Davis emerged as his own figure in the Jazz world by creating his own nine piece band that incorporated Davis’ style with the new up and coming West coast Jazz beat. The “cool jazz” style had emerged with Davis’ band and the properly named classic album “The Birth of Cool” set Davis apart as a true innovator in the Jazz scene.
