In the summer of 2002, the seniors and I of the Gahanna Lincoln football team had the opportunity to hold a football camp for young children between the grades of fifth through eighth. Two main purposes of the football camp were to gain these children’s attention and keep them occupied in all situations, and in order to do this my high school football coach assigned each senior football player to a specific football concept to teach these children. These concepts consisted anywhere from teaching these children helpful skills to tactics and offensive and defensive plays. A select few of the seniors were chosen to teach all these aspects to the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders; I was picked by my football coach to be one of these individuals who were able to teach every child that attended Gahanna’s camp. I had to obtain the status of a great youth football camp counselor by excelling in abilities of an understanding person towards children’s needs, having a vast knowledge of the concepts of football, and being an entertainer. Through my personal experience with children in my life, I was able to understand every child who came to the camp and their personal and health issues. It is crucial to be able to suppress your mind and think as a child, in order to understand their individual needs. Once this is accomplished, a person can realize how and why a child is reacting to certain situations and comprehend the origin of all actions.
