In popular culture, it is almost impossible to escape the theme of gender’s role in the identity of an individual. The music industry has always been an outlet for thousands of artist’s opinions and viewpoints, and often, we find that in songs, these artists perpetuate an aspect of their gender through the lyrics they vocalize. When exploring female gender identities in the music industry, there are two extreme personalities that we find often; that of the raging, liberated feminist and of the codependent, bubble-gum-pop diva. ... She right away draws a parallel between her gender and her defenseless nature. ... ” Britney Spears reveals through her words that her gender identity is more closely related to that of women living in the earlier part of last century than that of the modern woman. ...
Not only does Britney Spears magnify the codependent nature of her gender identity but she draws a picture of strength and dominance for the male gender. ... In truth, we should not criticize her for perpetuating the female identity that she has developed for herself, but it is hard not to when you think of how retroactive her lyrics are on the many women trying so hard to develop equal standings among males in today’s society.
