daddy, by Joyce Carol Oats

Sylvia Path shows her self in the poem “Daddy“. She uses tone, subject, and speech in the poem to show her feelings towards her dead father. Her husband also hurt her in the end. Her tone implies strong hatred and disgust for the relationships with both her father and husband. The poem was written in 1963, the same year as her suicide. She describes her relationship and feelings of guilt, fear, and pain that her fathers death caused her. The tone is of comparing her father to a God, a Nazi, and a vampire. He was impressive to her. She describes him as a “ghastly statue with one gray toe“, I believe as overwhelming, yet fake and cold.
