Until about 40 years ago manufacturing accounted for 3 out of every 4 jobs in America. Today it is about 1 out of 4, while service sector jobs hold the 3 out of 4 position in the economy. Part of this reflects a trend of globalization and comparative advantages in labor held by some Third World and less-developed countries, and part of it is a natural progression as our economy adjusts to the new roles of technology.
