Until about 40 years ago manufacturing accounted for 3 out of every 4 jobs in America. Today it is about 1 out of 4, while service sector jobs hold the 3 out of 4 position in the economy. Part of this reflects a trend of globalization and comparative advantages in labor held by some Third World and less-developed countries, and part of it is a natural progression as our economy adjusts to the new roles of technology. In other words, did the product perform as promised and satisfy a human want? The practice of monitoring the entire process is known as operations management. Click here for an example. OPERATIONS PROCESSES The manufacture of goods is classified into five basic processes. The processes include chemical, fabrication, assembly, transport and clerical. They are detailed in the text.
