I think it is really interesting how we so often confuse the word, "myth" with the word "untruth". When we hear a bit of information that does not strike us as being totally correct, we sometimes say, "Thats just a myth. ... To begin with, however, I will apply the use of "myth" to sports. ... I realize, after reading Joseph Campbells The Power of Myth that the reason I follow the Forty-niners, and enjoy watching sports in general, is because of their mythology. ...
Myth is what gives sports meaning to the people who watch them. Without myth, the players would not be heroes and would be no fun to watch. ... It is surrounded by "untruth" instead of "myth". ...
The one statement in The Power of Myth that struck me as most important was when Campbell wrote, "The myth is the public dream, and the dream is the private myth." He went on to explain to Bill Moyers that, when an individuals private dreams are out of step with the public myth, then the individual is likely to become alienated in his or her society. ... Yet they followed their personal dreams and, end the end, were able to change and shape the public myth. ... I will also be very pleased if it becomes part of the public myth. ... However, artists do the world little good if they just work for the public myth. ... Then, the public myth becomes the public "truth".
Campbell, in The Power of Myth, tells us that heroes have adventures. ... In The Power of Myth, however, Campbell wrote that he was also raised Catholic and that he found it to be an advantage. ...
Reading The Power of Myth has taught me the difference between "myth" and "untruth". ... I will always hope that my art can become part of the public myth as well as my own private dream.
