I want to look at a specific area of bioethics that has significant bearing on how we think about life and death: euthanasia. Right or wrong, euthanasia is a hotly debated issue and may become a factor in our lives at any given moment. ...
Euthanasia has several different concepts within itself that must be defined in the beginning. ... So how do we relate this to an ethical discussion of euthanasia? ... Some denounce any form of euthanasia, labeling all of it “physician-assisted suicide,” while others allow for it as a way of releasing another from pain and “sending them to God. ... Those who would say that any form of euthanasia is wrong hold that a person is a person until their life ends. Those who advocate certain forms of euthanasia hold that the terminally ill have no future hope of personhood. ...
Finally, I must discuss the implications that euthanasia has for us. The legalization of some or all forms of euthanasia carries with it stiff implications for our world, as does the outlaw of euthanasia. If we outlaw euthanasia, I really think that it will become something that must be done illegally in secret, making it just more difficult, not impossible. People will continue to practice euthanasia as long as people feel it is necessary.
In conclusion, I must say that whether we agree with euthanasia, or whether we find it unethical, we must keep in mind that people are involved, and that the way we treat those involved shapes their thinking about us forever. In times of difficult decisions and trials, especially those concerning death and euthanasia, we must keep in mind that God still loves the people. ... So as we sort out our position on the issue of euthanasia (or any other ethical issue for that matter), we must always show the love of God to those who need it most. This, above all is the Christian response to ethical issues such as euthanasia.
