The Bible, the historical record of the Christian faith, is the first religious document that only talks of belief in one god from the ancient times. During this time, many if not all of the civilizations present in the world were polytheistic, making Christianity the minority religion with its monotheistic view. However, even though the Bible talks of one god creating the world and man, it bears similarities to other religious documents of polytheistic religions.
Starting with Genesis, the Bible speaks of the world as being a dark place until one God created the world in seven days. ... A tradition still practiced today that newborn boys should be circumcised within eight days of birth traces its routes back to Genesis as a means to make a covenant between man and God. In other religions, the people believed they had to offer living sacrifices to the Gods to keep them please and be held as their chosen ones, but this God has clearly stated “And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you” (Reilly, 181). ... Like most laws, the Ten Commandments had its basic tenets, “Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” (Reilly, 182).
