The poem “The Toys” by Coventry Patmore is a very sad poem about a single parent punishing his child. ...
This poem is called “The Toys” because we see toys from a child’s and adult’s perspective - the toys are what comforted the child, and the toys are what keep an adult going. After the child was punished, he went to his room and fell asleep with his toys. We see the father having some relief from this, as he finds his son sleeping with the toys all around. From the father’s perspective, we see him talking about toys in his prayer to God. The toys he mentions aren’t toys like children’s toys, but things like money, cars, houses etc. The poem is called “The Toys” because the poet wanted to emphasize to us that toys are what comfort us when we are feeling down.
