The movie Save the Last Dance is a captivating teenage version of the American Dream; a dream that has been shaped by the hopes and goals of generations of individuals who have desired something better for their lives. They have believed that they can beat the odds to lead the kind of lives that they crave. Two key figures in this movie are Sara and Derek. Sara is a young ballerina who is trying to prove to herself that she is able to withstand the physical and mental anguish of auditioning so that she can be accepted into Julliard. In order for her to overcome these barriers she must work through her misguided guilt over the death of her mother. Derek is a young black male who has grown up in the ghetto of Chicago, without his mother who made her drug habit her priority instead of her children. As a result of his mothers absence Derek desires to help other hurting individuals. To achieve his goals he has worked his butt off in high school so that he would have the grades necessary to be accepted into Georgetown University. Derek is an individual who is motivated to do more with his life than to merely survive; he wants to make a difference in the world by becoming a doctor. This movie presents a new twist on minorities, mixed racial relationships, and stereotypes. Sara’s whole life changes when her mother is killed in a car wreck, which caused her move to Chicago to live with her father. At her new school she finds that her white skin makes her stick out like a big ‘ole grease stain on a wedding dress.
