External factors have played a part in shaping indonesian national interest since its circa as an independent republic in 1949, however in the past 20 years indonesia external factors becoming an increasingly greater force in shaping indonesian national interest. In the past xternal issuses such as suhartos “reformasi” with malysia and suhartos invasion of the self proclaimed east timor have influenced indonesia’s national interest. Yet in the last 20 years further external factors with the ability to shape national interest have developed, for example the sometimes troubled relationships with australia, the US and japan, the effect of preassure applieed by world leading organisations such as amnesty international and the united nations and the world media, as well as the power exercised by financial organisations such as the world bank, IMF and WTO.
